Between 1992 and 1998 Alnitak started a volunteering program in whcih almost 1000 people from Spain, Holland, Germany, Sweden and Belgium participated. Thanks to this volunteering system, it was possible to cover the costs of the field work of the monitoring work on cetaceans and sea turtles in the Alboran Sea. This volunteering project opened the doors of ALnitak´s expeditions to the general public, obtaining the award "Best Nature Product" at the International Tourism Fair in 1997.

In 1999 the prestigious Earthwatch Institute contacted Alnitak, and the volunteering programm "Spanish Dolphins" started, in which around 600 volunteers from 52 countries participated until July 2008.
